Great job!
I really hope I can get to play the game when you've ironed out all the bugs :)
Disclaimer:
This feedback is all in good heart and I am taking the time to write this all in detail hoping you guys can improve with it. Please don't take it in an insulting way but see it as a way to improve.
Art
Considering you have had a lot of sprite artists at the same time I can get that it might be hard to get 1 consistent style but most of the art feels really miss matched. I would have rather seen 1 consistently worse art style then some really good pieces (like the battle backdrop) and then see completely different shading styles like the enemies the tiles etc. This is really jarring. You guys should have tried to communicate and work with what the least skilled sprite artist could achieve and then either help them with shading or use the same shading style.
I was really missing some effects during the battle phase to portray skills being used.
Something I found extremely odd was that the player sprite changed to something completely different when it was pushing objects.
GUI
I was really missing some nicer GUI elements. They wouldn't have to be really good just like an HP Bar and a Mana Bar and maybe something to show who's turn it is.
Code
During exploration I could really tell that the collisions were pretty bad, this could have potentially be resolved if you would have used a smaller square sprite at the players feet and made that invisible and drew the player on top of that.
During the battle scene I was really missing some movement that could have been coded in like just make me player sprite move to x position during an attack to convey the player is doing something instead of just a block of text and a floating number over the players head.
Story
I saw 2 people worked on the story but I didn't get any story conveyed at all?
Music & Sound
I think the title music was brilliant and really set the theme. I then went into the exploration room and got a really happy vibe when the title music set a really dark setting. I think the battle music could have been used for the exploration and I think you could have gone for a bit more upbeat rock-ish style of music for the battle scene.
I also really missed some sound effects that would have really helped convey movement and attacks as well.
Bugs
After battle the player would be placed at the start of the room instead of the location he was currently in this caused me to not be able to progress and was hard-locked at what I believe was the 3 or 4th room.
The battle music kept playing after the battle I am assuming this is a bug as well.
All in all I can see what you guys tried to do and it really has potential. I like the character designs I like the idea it just really needed some polish. I know this is a game jam and you only get a week so please take all the feedback with a grain of salt!
Thanks for the extensive and very helpful comments!
ART
1 & 2) We had some problems in this area and we had to get by with what we could. The whole team is thankful for the artists that helped us, hopefully we can get get more in sync for the rest of development.
2) That was block and the pushing mechanics was supposed to have been removed. What you saw was a placeholder animation from earlier versions. We fixed it after the submission but since we can't change anything we'll only upload it after voting ends.
GUI
That was totally my fault. I was kinda in a hurry and ended up trying to help other areas of the game instead.
CODE
1) Yeah we need a lot of work on the world exploration part. That's the priority for the coding team atm.
2) Also my fault. I was going to work on that on the last day but ended up moving to other areas
STORY
We have an awesome story to tell but haven't been able to code any of it. We'll start adding it to the game soon
Music & Sound
Sounds was the last thing we added and we didn't have much time to discuss or test how it blended with the rest of the game
BUGS
1) Yeah that was the first thing we fixed after the deadline was over. :'-(
2) I don't know why that happened. Gotta go through it again but thanks for the report
You're very welcome! I hope you can use the feedback to improve.
